Miramar fitness facilities shape up
MIRAMAR--
When it comes to that universal New Year's resolution -- lose weight by exercising more -- the Miramar Community Services Department has a suggestion: use the city's facilities. It offers visitors either daily-use fees or annual memberships.
The community center, in western Miramar, opened in August.
"We've already had a big bump in attendance this year," said Kristine
Buckley, who oversees the center.
But Buckley said the fitness center has added extra expertise: Personal trainers
are available.
"We want to have a variety of personal trainers to meet everyone's
tastes," Buckley said. "For example, a woman might be more comfortable
working with a woman, or another person might prefer a Spanish-speaking personal
trainer."
The city runs background checks on each trainer, and requires them to be
certified.
With annual membership signups, the center is offering vouchers for two free
sessions with personal trainers.
"We're giving them two vouchers so they can evaluate more than one
trainer," Buckley said.
The city has set the prices for the rest of the training sessions at $50 a
session for singles. Package rates are available.
The fitness center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m. to 8
p.m. Saturdays; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Participants must be at least 15.
Annual memberships are $125 for individual Miramar residents, $200 for families
and $75 for those 65 or older.
The daily use fee is $5, regardless of age.
All nonresident prices are double.
