2 arrested at Miramar High after stabbing during fight
MIRAMAR -- Police arrested two Miramar High students
and confiscated two weapons Tuesday after one student stabbed another during a
fight.
The stabbing happened about 7:50 a.m. during a gym class behind Miramar High
School, 3601 Douglas Road. Two male students, ages 17 and 16, were fighting over
a girl when the 17-year-old stabbed the younger teen in the left bicep with a
pair of scissors he pulled from his pocket, Miramar Police spokesman Bill
Robertson said.
A gym teacher broke up the fight, and the 17-year-old student
was taken into custody by the police department's school resource officers. The
victim was taken to a nearby hospital for stitches, but his wound did not appear
serious, Robertson said.
The teens' names are not being published because of their ages.
Shortly after the stabbing, the suspect handed the scissors wrapped in a T-shirt
to another boy, 16, and asked him to hold them. Officers searched that boy and
found a knife in the back pocket of his pants, but no scissors, Robertson said.
That boy had already given the wrapped scissors to another student, who put the
bundle in his locker, unaware that scissors were inside, Broward School District
spokesman Joe Donzelli said.
The teen accused of the stabbing will be charged with aggravated battery and
expelled after a 10-day suspension. The teen who had the knife in his pocket
will be charged with possession of a weapon on school property and suspended for
ten days and could face expulsion.
The student who ultimately gave police the scissors will not be disciplined
because he didn't know he had them, Donzelli added.
